Creativepreneur behind the lens: Dr Julie Lord

Welcome to our new creativepreneur interview series! Today I sat down with Dr. Julie Lord, who just happens to be a neighbor, a friend and my “adjuster” in life. I started seeing her for treatment when I was diagnosed with piriformus and IT band syndrome after attempting my very first 50k. She’s not only helped me deal with the pain physically, but she gets the emotional pain that comes with injury – always listening first before prescribing or getting to work on the issue. My favorite thing about her is that she researches – you’ll find her nose deep in her books when you come over for an adjustment session, knowing that what you are going through is unique to you. Her goal is to help you heal from the inside in tandem with the outside. I just had to share her with you all because she is such a gem! Watching her business grow — from her home with a toddler and teenager — is incredibly impressive.

Tell us a little bit about your business and how you got started.  I graduated from chiropractic school in 1995, I started by working for other doctors. I had some really great mentors that taught me so much about nutrition and healing. Dr. Rob Bock was one of those mentors.

What is one tip you could give us for balancing working for yourself and home/family life? I have a husband, a toddler and teenager and a practice and also teach Pilates, so I have learned to do what only I can do or need to do. I will often times ask myself the question, “What is mine to do?,” and that really simplifies things. So many things can be delegated or hired to do. And they would do it better!

What business advice do you wish you would have been given before you started on your business journey?  A couple things… find mentors and connect with people that are better than you at your field… it will help you! Don’t stop working if you do not want to once you have children, it is so hard to stop and start. Keep your hand in your field a little, even if just once a week. It will keep momentum going.

What is the hardest thing you’ve had to do in your business?  Ha… give it up and re start it! My husband and I when we were very young decided to go into the ministry for a while for our church and I could not do both, so that was very hard to give up my chiropractic. Then again when I had my daughter Skyler, I had toxemia and was on bed rest at month 5, so letting go again. But it taught me not to fear loss or letting things go!

What is a favorite quote you live by? “Happiness is living what is” (unknown author

What is something you do every day that helps you be successful? I have a quiet time, a time of meditation and reflection where I read something inspirational. At the present, I am reading The Book of Awakening by Mark Nepos.

What are 3 things you have invested in for your business — big or small — that you couldn’t live without? My chiropractic table! An adjusting instruments I use, one specific called an activator, and my essential oils and topical organic sprays.

It’s the weekend. Stay in or go out? Combo of both! On Saturdays I like to have what I call ladybug girl and mamma lunch with my three year old daughter and we go out! Then Saturday nights my husband and I go out on a date. Sunday’s we stay in… I may cook with my daughter and read books.

Stretchy pants or jeans? Jeans all the way… my daily staple at work.
